ABOUT WingChun

WingChun was created in a world of war and chaos. The prosperous Ming Dynasty was overthrown by Manchurian invaders. They were called the Qing and established the last imperial dynasty of China. The Chinese resented the oppressive foreign rule, and some groups of resistance fighters sought to return the Ming back to power. From this WingChun was born.

Over the centuries, WingChun continued to be practiced and developed underground. Not until about halfway through the 20th century did it emerge from obscurity. During this period, It became notorious in Southern China and Hong Kong for its effectiveness in combat.

Today, there exists several variations each emphasizing different aspects of the art. Our curriculum focuses on the traditional self-defense aspects along with several decades of refinements.

WingChun CHARACTERISTICS

WingChun has a wide range of techniques which includes punching, kicking, knees, elbows, forearms, shoulders, joint breaking, etc. The characteristics of WingChun are economy of motion, directness, and practicality. WingChun can be very fast as a consequence of its emphasis on directness and efficiency. WingChun also uses the body’s natural range of motion instead of high-risk, acrobatic movements, so not a lot athleticism and flexibility is required to learn.
